What state manages the most internet traffic?
So you’ve been asked this very question by a client, and you can’t figure out what state has the most traffic. So, here we are to help you out.
There are multiple data points here to guide you in your search for that sweet golden nugget of information!
Let’s start with three simple facts about how internet traffic works.
The number one factor is, well, how much it is. Each site on the web produces a vast amount of traffic. With more visitors comes a greater chance of having to pay for hosting, but it also means fewer resources needed to load your webpage, and less time to do anything else. As good as that is. However, a larger chunk of all internet activity is due to bot traffic, where people visit sites without thinking due to low-cost click bots. In a nutshell, these are programs that use fake users to generate websites and then place ads at the top of the page. These programs have made billions in profit just so I don’t feel bad about putting up $50 for a few minutes of “fun” fun. Now let’s move on to another simple fact. We all know Google owns the majority of the search engines on the internet, so if your webpage is not indexed by Google, you won’t be able to find it through searches. And the other big company in web searches is Yahoo!
And finally, there are third parties such as Bing and Amazon who are involved in maintaining this enormous collection of web pages that make up our global digital infrastructure. They maintain their own codebase, so they are responsible for all the content on any website that goes live. This includes images, videos, and even audio clips! But wait! Before you get comfortable just saying “hmm” (hint: it isn’t really) let me explain how important this massive network of servers is. You’ll soon see why this process is crucial. Think of all the storage space on each server for your entire site and how many servers they use for backups. That will include the ones you choose to host your page there at any point. More servers = better redundancy and protection from hackers. For example, when Amazon sells you an instance of a cloud platform and you decide not to buy them, your site will not get fully stocked and will be unavailable in the future. Therefore, you must set up a backup environment. Yes, you might have heard of Cloudflare as a service, but their costs are exorbitantly high. There are several alternative solutions available, and we are going to focus on using GCP as our main provider.
So, where does all your traffic go? Let’s take the case of Youtube. When you upload a video on Youtube, Youtube takes a small percentage of its content — around 3% to 5% — from a server called AdSense. It is basically a program that pays you to post ads to your videos in the background of your videos. At face value. A video cannot be removed from YouTube unless you remove the ad or submit a copyright takedown. If your account gets hacked, you will be permanently blocked on youtube. But you can still save the video on your computer… so how do you know which server it was uploaded on? How do you know which ones? Well, once someone posts something on Youtube, every time they upload a video, they are uploading a piece of software on their system that will tell Youtube how to index their video. Because Youtube uses the same technology used by google and their systems, it knows everything about the user who uploaded the video. The only way to avoid this issue would be to manually delete your files from Youtube before putting on a video again. Or to simply host a totally different file type altogether. This solution is often recommended for those with smaller bandwidths or who are new to Youtube. Maybe your hosting account has limited storage, or a specific size that they cannot accommodate… well, you have two choices then, you can either rerun your account or create a completely new one. Either will result in losing access to your account and some essential details… I wouldn’t recommend both options because the first one means you end up paying for more server space, and the second will cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars. In my opinion, this is the least reliable method for anyone. Especially when I’m not sure what is happening behind the scenes, but for 99% of the cases I’m willing to bet the opposite. On the other hand, as you probably know, Google owns a huge part of youtube, so maybe they’ve got to give Youtube that little bit of credit for making youtube look like it’s the most popular website in the world. Don’t worry though, Google has not commented on this comment or anything along those lines… so you can play the long game and believe whatever they say. Maybe eventually, as Youtube grows bigger, Google will become aware of how much money Youtube makes. Not to mention that it would take a lot of time for Youtube to grow to a similar mass as facebook and/or Instagram to allow Youtube to regain ground and make Youtube a serious competitor. Until then Youtube will remain that small fraction of the social media market in the United States and the rest of the world. And no, this doesn’t mean you should stop uploading your amazing content, but that instead, use Youtube as a way to attract more views and reach more viewers. Even if Youtube feels like a shitty place to store your video, you need to upload it anyway: just stay within reason and respect Youtube’s Terms of Use and accept responsibility… there’s nothing wrong with that. You should never try to beat Youtube in terms of traffic. If you’re looking for tips, check out my story on how Youtube changed to a powerful website and the ways it could be improved.
So now, enough talking. Let’s see which states manage the most internet traffic and put our money where our mouths are.
New york city is the biggest metropolitan hub on earth — almost half of all internet traffic. 90% of all internet traffic happens in the United States. 70% of US households have one website. About 90% of all internet users reside in the USA. To understand the complexity of the United States’ net, it is easy to ignore where 80% of the population spends their time, especially during holidays. So, think about that last part. Also known as Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and Memorial Day. All of those days occur over several hours, so it’s pretty easy to guess which areas in America are the busiest. The northeast of the country is notorious for its cold winters, the midwest is home to the largest sports fandom in the world, and Texas and Oklahoma are always considered holiday hubs.
Oklahoma is another great tourist destination because it offers tons of tourism opportunities. It is an American melting pot! Tourism, entertainment, cuisine, history, art, music are all things people love to come for. Its also a hotspot for tourists, as the region’s diverse culture attracts millions of visitors every year, mainly coming from Europe. Tourism is a booming industry in this area, and this explains why it’s a top ranked state for having the highest economic growth.
Texas is another popular tourist destination on Earth. It boasts a wide variety of tourist attractions. It also has one of the most populated places in the world! It is home to over a hundred of national forests, plenty of deserts to explore, and several waterfalls and rapids. Visitors can enjoy visiting the cities like Houston and Dallas, and visiting historic towns like El Paso and Corpus Christi.
Oklahoma has lots of tourist attractions, too. One thing you should keep in mind is that despite what you might tell yourself, Oklahoma isn’t the most visited state on Earth. It doesn’t make any sense. Then again, it is home to a vibrant history. The landscape is breathtaking. Ok state has the longest paved roads on Earth; and you can’t miss seeing Fort Belvoir National Monument. Plus there are also fascinating museums, historical artifacts, authentic architecture, and gorgeous landscape views.
Oklahoma is also a hotbed for various sporting events, including football, hockey, golfing, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and wrestling. Another notable feature of Oklahoma is the beauty of the plains. Just imagine running across dozens of gorgeous brown grassy plains surrounded by lakes and beautiful mountains. This is a land blessed by nature lovers.
Oklahoma is also home to a multitude of beautiful landscapes. Like Oklahoma Beach, Lake Superior, White Sands National Park, etc.
California is one of the top ranked states on Planet Earth. Although it may seem like it has a large population of illegal immigrants to deal with, the truth is that 60 per cent of the population lives here. California has become the dreamer’s dream since 1849. It’s easy to travel, and there’s plenty to do here. California is also where most of America’s jobs currently reside, as well as the location for a handful of major business parks. California is so popular they made Yosemite National Park, Hollywood Studios, Silicon Valley, Disneyland, etc. These are just a few tourist spots dedicated to California, but there are plenty more! This is a mega state, with some 200 distinct counties. The state is divided into 5 major regions consisting of the Central Coast, Northern Bay, Southern Peninsula, Sacramento, Nevada, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego
